Numerical Block-Based Simulation of Rocking Structures Using a Novel Universal Viscous Damping Model

چکیده
Unreinforced masonry structures, particularly façade walls, are seismically vulnerable due to their weak connections with adjacent floors, and/or roofs. During an earthquake, such walls formulate local mechanisms prone out-of-plane collapse. This behavior has been largely investigated using classical rocking theory, which assumes the structure responds as a rigid body undergoing motion, energy dissipation at impact. Due complexity of problem, however, e.g., number degrees freedom or boundary conditions, numerical block-based modeling is gaining momentum. However, models lack consistent and reliable treatment loss paper bridges gap between well-established theory damping in modeling. Specifically, it proposes equivalent viscous model through novel ready-to-use predictive equations that capture dissipative phenomena during both one-sided two-sided planar motion. The results reveal satisfactory performance proposed comparisons experimental from literature highlight its universality robustness applications fundamentally different software.

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...
Viscous damping of perforated planar micromechanical structures.
The paper gives an analytical approximation to the viscous damping coefficient due to the motion of a gas between a pair of closely spaced fluctuating plates in which one of the plates contains a regular system of circular holes. These types of structures are important parts of many microelectromechanical devices realized in MEMS technology as microphones, microaccelerometers, resonators, etc.T...

The development and applications of a supplemental viscous damping device with active capacity are described. The system of the dampers de ned as active viscous damping system (AVDS) is presented herein. Structural control principles de ned here as active control theory (ACT) are used to obtain the control forces at each time step during an excitation. Control of the damping forces is possible ...
متن کاملEquivalent Damping Ratios of Structures with Supplemental Viscous Dampers
The current design formulas such as those provided by FEMA273/274 for building structures with supplemental viscous dampers were derived based on the shear building assumption. However, for medium-rise to high-rise buildings that deform in a combined form of shear and bending when subjected to seismic loading, the design using existing formulas may result into an actual damping ratio much lower...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Mixing in Viscous - Fingering
Mixing of two fluids in viscously unstable displacements is far from being fully understood. It is not known how mixing efficiency depends on the viscosity contrast between the fluids, especially for adevction-dominated flows (Peclet number Pe > 103). It is well known that when a less viscous fluid displaces a more viscous fluid, the displacement front is unstable and leads to the formation of ...
